
Brass Island is beautiful, tropical and home to many thriving communities.
Location
Brass Island is situated in the heart of the Niger River Delta in Bayelsa State, south-western Nigeria. It lies at the mouth of the Brass River, a tributary of the Niger.
Climate & Landscape
Brass Island is located in the wettest part of Nigeria. There is typically heavy rainfall from spring to late autumn and a short dry season in between.
Population & Employment
Population - There are 18 Brass Island communities identified in our extensive Social and Environmental Impact Assessment. The three largest communities are Twon Brass, Okpoama and Eweoma, while the smallest are Imbikiri, Oiyenkia and Mansonkiri.
The population near the project area is expected to follow an upward trend.
Employment - The most popular occupation in the Brass Island communities is fishing (39%). Many people are also traders and farmers.
Informal sector jobs (fishing, farming, trading and artisanship) are the dominant livelihoods in the communities (62%). Formal employment with private sector companies and the civil service accounts for just 17% of jobs.
Unemployment is currently about 7.5%.

No sites of historical or archaeological importance have been identified which will be harmed during the development of the Brass LNG project.
