The Micro-credit Scheme

About the project

In June 2005, Brass LNG commissioned the Community Development Partners (CODEP) to educate Brass Island residents about the benefits of new workers coming to the Island to build our LNG plant.

Along the way, we identified several female entrepreneurs living in Twon Brass, Okpoama, and Ewoama who were finding it difficult — if not impossible — to raise capital for starting up or expanding their small businesses.

Brass LNG recognised the longer-term significance of supporting their efforts to develop business expertise and secure financing. We contracted CODEP to return to Brass Island and educate women about micro-credit and enterprise development.

Subsequent workshops were held between 6th and 10th June, 2006.

Planning

Brass LNG planned and developed the project. NGOs and the Oil and Gas Committees of the communities also gave their support as needed.

Project status

We're about to launch a test Micro-credit Scheme and will invite 30 women from Twon Brass, Okpoama, and Ewoama to take part.
